Caneel Bay, A Rosewood Resort, nestled within the 5,000-acre Virgin Islands National Park on the island of St. John, remains faithful to this vision of founder Laurance Rockefeller and to his reverence for the environment. Seven secluded beaches border an expansive paradise of 170 lush acres. In this pristine setting, comfortably elegant resort accommodations showcase beautiful vistas of ocean or gardens, yet the structures – artfully built in the landscape – are barely in view. Caneel remains purposefully absent of modern glitz as well as digital and electronic distractions – it’s a place where attendees can naturally focus on the purpose of your get-together, and feel enriched in the process.

Caneel Bay’s serene setting in nature is itself a truly unique meeting destination. Whether you are bringing your team together for a strategy session, recognizing key clients in a group setting, or rewarding your top sales executives, your guests will be captivated by Caneel’s gracious Caribbean service and simple elegance.

HISTORY:Top

Laurance S. Rockefeller "discovered" Caneel Bay in 1952, on a Caribbean sailing trip.  The total population of the island was only 400, and 85% of the islands topography was jungle.  He foresaw the perfect vacation spot amid this unspoiled land and purchased the old Caneel Bay Plantation.  In 1955, he began developing an infrastructure on the island to support the resort with power, fresh water and roads.  He oversaw every detail of the development.  He donated the property to Jackson Hole preserve, a non-profit, conservation-oriented foundation supported by the Rockefeller family.  The preserve later purchased 5,000 acres surrounding Caneel Bay and donated the land to the federal government, thus paving the way for the creation of the national park.

ACCOMMODATION:Top

Within Caneel's unspoiled landscape are 166 unique guests rooms and cottages that have been exquisitely renovated with natural woods and native stone to reflect the island's abundant beauty. Hand-crafted furniture and richly woven fabrics impart an air of the exotic as cool Caribbean trade winds whisper through the plantation shutters.

All rooms are equipped with :

  • Louvered walls
  • Open picture windows
  • Ceiling fans
  • Tiled bathrooms
  • Patios and spectacular views of the beaches or gardens
  • Personal bars and wall safes

Guest rooms reflect two color schemes: corals and teals in whimsical fish patterns, representing the underwater world and sunny yellows, corals and raspberry, artfully blended in a pineapple motif.

Once the island home of the Rockefeller family, the famous Cottage 7 has housed assorted celebrities and political figures, who enjoy its secluded location and its five individually designed rooms, some featuring Dutch-style, four poster beds.
