Belvedere Palace:Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736), the most brilliant military mind of his age and the legendary conqueror of the Turks, commissioned Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt to design and build this garden Palace as a summer residence outside the city walls. After Eugene's death, the Palace, rated as one of the most exquisite baroque structures in the world, was acquired by the Habsburg family. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was the residence of Archduke Francis Ferdinand, who was assassinated in Sarajevo in 1914. The equestrian statue of Prince Eugene of Savoy can be found on Heldenplatz.
Schoenbrunn PalaceIn 1559, Emperor Maximilian II purchased a former mill, which had been converted into a little mansion. J B Fischer von Erlach began construction of the present Palace in 1696, on the orders of Emperor Joseph I. The Palace was the residence of Empress Maria Theresa, her husband Emperor Francis I and their 16 children. Schoenbrunn Palace was generally used as the summer residence of the Habsburgs. Only Emperor Francis Joseph (1848-1916), born in Schoenbrunn in 1830, spent the last years of his life entirely at Schoenbrunn.
St Stephan's CathedralThe architectural history of the Cathedral begins in the 12th century. The oldest parts - the Giant Gate (Riesentor) and the Towers of the Heathens (Heidentürme), both Romanesque in style - were built during the reign of King Ottocar II of Bohemia over Vienna, between the death of the last Babenberg and the beginning of the Habsburg rule.
Spanish Riding SchoolFrom 1729 to 1735, the 'Winter Riding School' was built on the grounds of the Spanish Riding School, then known as the 'Old Garden of Eden', by J E Fischer von Erlach. The main purpose of the school was to exercise horses and to keep riding skills through the winter. During the Congress of Vienna and on several other occasions, sparkling galas and festive dinners have been held there.
